Week 3: 08/05/2018 - 08/11/2018

Day 22 - 08/11/2018 Never a Goodbye...it`s a hope to see you again!

Saturday, 08/11/2018, was for some of us the last day in America or at least in Washington. It was the day that nobody of us wanted to face so fast. The last day after three unforgettable and funny weeks. For some of us continued the journey in the US... One went to New York, other ones to Miami, to Philadelphia and some stayed in Washington, but for the others it was the way back to Germany.

While some of us went to the zoo in the morning, others tried some yoga at the hotel`s class and some had a delicious last breakfast. At 12 p.m., we all met at the hotel`s lobby and waited for our ride to the airport. It was such a beautiful but also sad atmosphere. We knew that saying goodbye came near….

So the time came and we drove to the airport, had lunch there, had funny moments  and wonderful conversations. After an hour delay, we finally got on the plane. Leaving the plane back in Germany was the door back to our daily life. Leaving the wonderful people you spend three weeks with. Leaving Virginia Tech, where we met great people and had amazing experiences and memories. Leaving unique Washington DC. But having the most beautiful and unforgettable memories for a lifetime!

DAY 20 - 08/09/2018 Goodbye Blacksburg - Hello Washington

At sometime between “way too early to get up” and “what, it’s still dark outside for at least an hour” the young Fulbright Group made their way to Washington D.C. by bus. After more than 4 hours and a short stop for breakfast we finally arrived at ‘’The Embassy Row Hotel’’ which has a nice rooftop bar and pool. While some out of the group decided yet to keep things easy and relax in the pool, a few others went for some sightseeing in the city, including me.

The White House, Abraham Lincoln Monument, Capitol Hill, Washington Monument any many other great buildings were on the plan. It was very impressive to see all of those places, which you normally just know from the news or Hollywood movies. As the evening began to rise, there was also some sort of peaceful protest going on in front of the White House. Some people had signs and others played some music on instruments.

So after 17km of walking in the very hot and humid air of the capitol of the United States, we went back to the hotel to refresh under the shower and then meet again for dinner. Some others joined in and we went to a nice Mexican restaurant for some Tacos or Enchiladas and drinks. After some good talking and kind of a struggle to get the bill done, we all finally went to bed, as it was a long day without too much sleep. Hard to believe that the end to such an amazing journey is coming closer..

DAY 19 - 08/08/2018 Challenge coin ceremony or goodbye vt

Sadly, today was already our last day, at least at Virginia Tech, as we were about to spend the last few days in Washington D.C.. After trying out everything we didn’t get to taste yet at breakfast, we headed over to our last session of Developing Written Voice. The class itself wasn’t too spectacular, we spent time researching tips on Academic Writing and finishing and correcting our assignments, but in the end just waited to get it over with.

At noon it was time for our first goodbye: we got to enjoy our last meal at D2. While some of us couldn’t think of how they used to get along without the daily choice between eight food shops, the majority was craving for an ordinary German bread.

In our last Communicating Science class we watched and reviewed the records of all our TED Talks together. It was very interesting seeing and hearing oneself from the perspective of others, as most of us had a different perception of how their talk went before we watched them, generally changing for the better.

After class, we would all get back to our dorms and get ourselves dressed up and ready for the final ceremony in a ball room at The Inn at Virginia Tech and Skelton Conference Center. In a highly emotional atmosphere we had a nice dinner together and afterwards received our program certificate and Challenge Coin. During the following speeches, tears were shed in gratefulness and sadness that the program was already over. As a teeny-tiny thank-you gift for their incredible commitment and all the great days we had with them, we gave a few typically German sweets and other specialities that everyone had brought from their hometown to Alli, Ian, David, Lynn, Carrie and Patty, as well as postcards with a few warm words.

DAY 18 - 08/07/2018 TED Talks or the Art of Presentation

Today was our big appearance on stage. The whole day was dedicated to our TED Talks that were live recorded in front of several cameras in a professional studio. In order to prepare appropriately for this enormous task, we had two Communicating Science classes. In the morning, we refined our speeches in smaller groups and had the possibility to practice our presentations in a more private atmosphere.

In the afternoon, we headed to Whittemore Hall to record our TED Talks. A team of four experts operated the cameras and tried everything to set up the perfect scene for us.

Everybody was equipped with his own microphone and had three minutes to present the one thing we would tell the world if everybody was listening. From climate change over fairly produced clothing, the project of Engineers without Borders and stem cell donations to an autonomous future we shared our very emotional, funny, serious and profound thoughts.

Inspired by these incredible visions, we finished our day calmly by watching a movie in the Lyric Theater in Blacksburg.

DAY 17 - 08/06/2018 Delicious S’Mores or the Adventures of Stitchy the Porcupine

Sadly, today was the first day of our last week at Virginia Tech. Because we are leaving for Washington D.C. on Thursday our weekly schedule was slightly changed and Thursday’s classes were moved to Monday instead. Thus, after a delicious breakfast, we went to Torgerson Hall for our Developing Written Voice class.

Several grammar chants helped us to warm up for class and simultaneously improved our articulation skills. Afterwards, we had vivid group discussions about giving tips in restaurants and enforcing a curfew in the state of Virginia.

Ensuing, some written exercises rounded up this day’s course.

A spectacular lunch prepared us for active warm up at our Communicating Science class in the afternoon. At first, we shared our opinion on the weekend’s activities and, in hindsight, discussed our experiences on the Steppin’ Out and during the March for our Lives.

A special version of tag with one word at a time ended in a very confusing story about a father who didn’t like to run, horses and flowers. Continuing with storytelling games, we played Dixit and created stories about Stitchy the porcupine and a little girl’s dreams about nuclear power.

The rest of the class was dedicated to the preparation of our upcoming TED Talks where we could develop new inspirations.

Due to heavy thunderstorms last Thursday, the bonfire at David’s place was rescheduled to this Monday evening. So we got to enjoy a very sporty and delicious night surrounded by beautiful nature. We played frisbee, boccia and soccer and roasted some S’Mores around his fireplace. We were welcomed very warmly and were lucky to get to know his generous family.

DAY 16 - 08/05/2018 Brunch at Professor Raun's house and fun at claytor lake Or never stop eating

Today we woke up and it was the first morning we decided not to have breakfast. Why? Because we went to Professor Raun’s for brunch! We wanted to leave some space for the food there. After a 30 minute ride, we arrived.

Everything was prepared, we had so much selection. From cinnamon rolls to simple bread with butter, different casseroles, fruits, granola, breakfast muffins and even Nutella. While sitting around and enjoying the food, we talked and laughed a lot. We even had the chance to explore the beautiful house! In addition we were entertained by a jam session by Sebastian, Anastasia and Patty‘s husband playing the piano and  the cello. Patty, it was a pleasure to be your guests and we really enjoyed your delicious brunch!

At 1 pm we startet with the second highlight of the day, a trip to Claytor Lake. We were able to just lay at the beach, enjoy the sun, swim in the lake and chill a little bit.

We had an amazing time, the view was unbelievable, the water was warm and our mood was great.

A few of us rented a boat which was lot of fun crusing around with. It was an impressive experience to drive the boat on our own and being the captain. Besides that we had the chance to go tubing. Even if some of us fell in the water we enjoyed the ride a lot.

At 6 pm we drove home and some of us went for dinner to the city.

All in all it was an amazing day here at Virginia Tech!

Week 2: 07/29/2018 - 08/04/2018

Day 15 - 08/04/2018 No Tubing or we can have fun anyways

We had planned to go tubing down New river today, so we were very sad, when it was cancelled due to too high water levels.

So we used the morning to play soccer, take a sunbath or simply rest. Later we went to the Steppin’ Out Festival in Downtown Blacksburg. Some of us listened to Lynn’s band, other were arguing with pro-gun-protesters and some just went shopping. Some people even volunteered at the shirt booth and the beer bar. We all had a great time and later in the evening most of us met at the main stage, where we partied together and enjoyed the great weather.

Day 14 - 08/03/2018 Drone park and steppin' out or our last friday at vt

After a hearty breakfast, we visited the site of the Virginia Tech Drone Park this morning. The Virginia Tech Mid-Atlantic Aviation Partnership

(MAAP) is a test site for unmanned aircraft systems.

Mr Calvert, the Safety Manager of the park, gave us a presentation about the history of drones and tried to find a lot of references to Germany. It was quite interesting to hear that even before the invention of a “civilian” computer, drones were already equipped with one and were able to fly automatically. Unfortunately, due to the rather bad weather, we weren’t able to fly a real drone out in the park but at least we got to try out a flight simulator. Some of us were surprisingly really good at it, others ended up crashing the drone (thank god it was not a real one).

We drove back to have lunch at our beloved dining hall D2 and then had free time for the rest of the day.

A small group went shopping at Walmart, Target and TJ Maxx since our last week is coming up. Others used the time wisely to take naps and work on our assignments.

As it was also the first day of the 38th annual Steppin’ Out Festival in Downtown Blacksburg, we decided to have dinner there and take a look at the various booths. Luckily, the sun came out in the right moment and we could enjoy a beautiful sunset together with delicious food.

The morning started after the breakfast with the class „Developing Written Voice“ where we first learned to describe some geometrical objects to each other, which our partner then had to paint. That is not so easy as you might spontaneously think about. After this exercise we discussed how you can describe objects and statistic data in general. Like Churchill said once:

The only statistics you can trust are those you falsified yourself.

At the end of the class we all got a painting of Norman Rockwell, an American artist, which we had to describe in 600-800 words.

After the lunch we started with the class „Communication Science“ at the Theater 101. After a short warm up with Patty and Carrie we started to interact in an exercise which was called „Relationship statues and Add- on Statues“ where first each one of us had to show a statue pose after each other and then have been joined by another person, which had to be a relative statue. Later we did some mirror exercises. For that we started first with reflecting the movements of our partners. Than we had to reflect the talking of our partner and later we had to sing a song which our partner had to reflect as well, which needed much more concentration. To experience and understand the Critical Response Process (CRP) Carrie baked us some vegan chocolate cake, on which we had to respond on the CRP rules. After this we presented some of our open scenes and reflected them by the CRP.

Day 13 - 08/02/2018 Classes or Arguing against Gun Violence

Today was a quite intense day. After a long Karaoke night breakfast was good. We went to Developing Written Voice Class. This time we wrote definitions and we were shown different kinds of helpful phrases. As a homework we have to write an argumentation.

After a nice lunch we headed to Communication Science. We saw another interpretation of the texts we had to prepare a short act for. After that we had a warm-up session where everybody had to come up with one exercise. Then we talked about passions and disagreements with different partners.

What was different to all the other classes we have had so far was the “The March for our Lives” Pitch. It was very interesting as some students who were affected by shootings at U.S. schools. They answered questions posed by the audience and had a deep conversation about the topic. It was so impressive that they were so self-confident and into that topic. Their way of expressing themselves was so mature for their young age. After that we had dinner and did our homework.

Day 12 - 08/01/2018 APEX CEnter and Class or working on a start-up Biz

After breakfast we went to the APEX Center for Entrepreneurs. Howard Haines gave us a short but interactive presentation about what is necessary for potential entrepreneurs to build up their businesses. It was more like a workshop than an actual presentation as he gave us tasks to make up a fictional idea about a business. We started by simply collecting six nouns and six adjectives. Howard connected them e.g. pope – funny or internet – green. In groups we developed an own business by different steps like brainstorming, upcoming products and marketing. In the end we should do a presentation about the product and Ian was a judge while Alli was evaluating tweets we created for each business idea. Everybody had a lot of fun as it was one of those sessions where you could bring in your own ideas rather than just listening to presentations.

After a filling and delicious lunch, it was time for Communicating Science. At first, we had a short talk about being an

individual in the group and it turned out that we were feeling quite similar. Midterm feedback was positive.

After that we had a fun sound and motion session and we went on with the rest of the little plays we had to do in groups of two. It was interesting how different the same conversations could turn out when acted by different people. Finally, we evaluated each other’s collaboration while learning the roleplay but also the time we spent together.

In the evening some of us went to Karaoke at Champs in Downtown Blacksburg after we finished our daily journaling and some other homework.

Half of our time at VT is over now and we are sad on the one hand but on the other we are looking forward to going to Washington D.C.

Day 11 - 07/31/2018 Courses

Day 10 - 07/30/2018 Virginia TEch Corporate Research Center & swimming in the NEw River

On Day 10 we visited the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center (CRC). There we got an overview about the research center by the President and CEO Ph.D. Joe Meredith. It is interesting, that US research centers share a different self-understanding compared to Europe.

While European research- and cooperate-centers are mostly real estate focused, US centers like the CRC are mostly service oriented. That means, that they share not only buildings and space with companies, but also try to connect researches and companies better.

The CRC is therefore also a for-profit organization. Despite it is totally owned by a public foundation supporting VT with its funds.

In the discussion after the presentation we talked about the differences between the European and the US research and education system. After this we got an presentation from Emisshield about their product, a high emissivity coating technology. We also got a tour of the research park and visited VPT who are building power conversion solutions, which are certified for military, aviation and space applications. Our daily-used GPS-System relies for example on components which are built in Blacksburg.

For lunch on earth we had some burgers with pulled pork.

In the afternoon we had been invited by Lynn to a beach at the New River. In the picturesque landscape we took a swim to the other riverside and had fun with a rope swing. Some also canoed or took a sunbath – which had a sudden end in the upcoming thunderstorm. On the way back in the car a lightning stroke only a few hundred foot away from us.

Day 9 - 07/29/2018 McAfee Knob and Homeplace Restaurant or Healthy balance

Today we had to get up a little bit earlier than usually to get ready for hiking up the Appalachian trail.

After breakfast, we met at 7:45 am with Alli, Carrie and Ian to discuss the dangerous wildlife of the American forests which includes rattlesnakes and bears. Then we got into the vans and drove to our starting point. David joined us there and we all packed some snacks and drinks for the hike.

Since the weather was simply perfect, everybody had to put sunscreen on. While walking up the 4 miles to the Knob, we had interesting conversations about different

cultures, education systems and history.

When we finally reached the incredible plateau, we felt like we were on top of the world. The panorama was just fascinating!

Following an extensive photo session, we had a quick snack break. We had been up there for one hour when we started our way back to the parking lot.

Considering we were all super hungry from our hike, we then drove to “The Homeplace”, a restaurant serving typical American food. We got to try fried chicken, country ham, roast beef, corn bread, mashed potatoes, corn, beans and blueberry cobbler. Afterwards, everybody was completely satisfied and we made our way back to campus.

We concluded the day by playing volleyball and watching some movies together.

Week 1: 07/21/2018 - 07/28/2018

Day  8 - 07/28/18 Free-time and Red Sox Or working on our baseball Career

Today we had a lot of free time, so we built different groups. One group went to Cox’s Driving Range. In order to get there, we rented some of the new bikes offered on campus. After a 30 minutes ride, we arrived at the range where we could practice in the batting cages how to hit baseballs. Before we left we received some vouchers for playing miniature golf and more pitches.

Another group went climbing and hiking in West Virginia with a rented car.

In the evening we went to Salem to watch a baseball game of the Salem Red Sox at the Haley Toyota Field. It was a pleasure to watch the game from our private area where we had burgers, hot dogs and a lot more for dinner.

Due to the fact that Christmas in July is celebrated at the moment and this game was the last one in July, the theme of the evening was Christmas, so everyone dressed up in Christmas colors and the Grinch and Santa Claus were around. The origin of this tradition is not clear, but generally it is said that there will be a strong and happy winter Christmas season if it is celebrated in summer.

All in all it was very interesting to watch a baseball game once, but many of us still prefere other sports.

On our way back to VT we continued our tradition to turn up the music in the cars and sing along.

DAY 7 - 07/27/18 Visiting institute for creativity, arts, and technology or First day of sun

Friday morning has been very interesting. Overeaten as always, we walket to  Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology, which is a 20min walk on campus. After a presentation from Ben Knapp, he showed us the cube - a room for researching acoustics and virtual reality. We got the chance to listen to a bongo concert in different dimensions. One time the bongo was straight behind us, the other time it was at the very top and then it was "running" around us.

The cube is also made for VR - testing, because there is enough space to try it without running into something. We played two different games, One VR was under water with creasy jellyfish swimming around you and the other one was a simulated world with a tornado approaching.

Luckily friday was the first day without any rain. It was warm and sunny the whole day, which was perfect because after noon we has freetime.

A group of us took the bus to Christiansburg, which was a 20 min drive for $ 0.50 one way. The mall in Christansburg is very small but it was great to explore the city and snatch some cheap offers!

One part of the group went mountain biking in the Blue Ridge Mountains:

But it didn't go like expected. Our tourguide arrived one hour in delay because his car had a flat tire. Finally we started but after view moments the pedal of a bike fell off. We couldn't fix it, so we had to go back to the starting point for getting a new bike. We were a little bit angry, we lost so much time just waiting in that beautiful landscape. But when we finally started the "real" tour it was amazing: The trails were super cool. We crossed puddles or even small parts of streams and we enjoyed the great view over a natural tiny lake. But the best part were the steep trails themselves: We speeded downhill without any fear! Afterwards we were completely dirty and exhausted.

Check out our video!

Mountain Bike Tour

DAY 6 - 07/26/18 undergraduate research symposium and Lane stadium OR feeling like a vip

After another great breakfast we met Ian and Carrie outside of the Dietricks Hall to walk together to the Goodwin Hall for joining the 2018 Summer Undergraduate Reasearch Symposium. There we listened to a key note speech of Professor Dr. William (Bill) Hopkins about the importance of doing what you are passionated in. He talked very vivid about his own experiences and goals in life when he was an undergraduate student like we are today.

Afterwards we had the chance to talk to more than 50 of the american undergraduates about their researches. They explained the results by presenting it on different posters. Because of our task to evaluate their communication and presentation skills, some of them thought we were some kind of judges (and therefore we felt very important). The exchange with "real american students" has been a great experience for all of us!

In our "Communication Science" class in the afternoon we learned a lot about non-verbal communication with other people in a funny kind of way. In addition to that, we tried to play one given scene in different styles to win the sympathy of the audience (rest of the class).

In the evening, we visited the Lane Stadium of Virginia Tech. After a tour through the football stadium and the museum, we had our dinner in the VIP-Lounge with a great view over the field. We also were lucky to see a few players doing some additional training.

After enjoying our hamburgers, we sang some karaoke songs and it was a lot of fun for the singers and the audience.

DAY 5 - 07/25/18 EVEN MORE COURSES OR OUR FIRST BIG GAME

On our second day of classes, we got to listen to a presentation hold by David Moore about standards for scientific research and publication. After that Lynn introduced us to a little bit of American culture by teaching us the rules of baseball.

To enlarge upon the topic we got active and tried out a simple version of baseball outside on the campus.

We had a lot of fun!!!!

After we finished our lunch, we ran through pouring rain to get to our next class.

Drowned in water and tucked into warm blankets, we did a few games to improve our communication skills. Additionally we the aim was to open up and feel comfortable performing in front of each other.

In the afternoon we decided to go the the local farmers market. Again it was raining.

After more food for dinner, some of us were heading into town for some karaoke.

DAY 4 - 07/24/18 FIRST DAY OF COURSES or Student Life

Today we had our first day of courses. First, we attempted the „Developing Written Voices“ course with Lynn. When we got into the room everyone was excited about the fancy and functional chairs (they even had cup holders!) and the big flat screens and MacBooks, since we are not used to such a high tech classroom.

We played a game to get to get to know each other even better „2 truths and 1 lie“. After that, we got a short overview of what will happen in this course.

Then we started talking about the topic „Argumentation “ by reading and discussing a letter from Martin Luther King, which he wrote in prison talking about why peaceful protests were needed at that time and stating his point of view by also summarizing other peoples' views. In addition to that, we put this in the context of the situation nowadays. In Germany and the USA are many discussions about immigrants and refugees. Using this topic, we practically tried to put our thoughts and opinion into a more scientific argumentation.

After lunch we went to our next course „Communicating Science“. Again, we were impressed by the interior of the room, which was more of a theatre than a classroom.

The first task was to write down our feelings and mood at that moment. We started stretching and moving to get us more motivated, afterwards. Then we got to introduce ourselves and our goals and hopes for the whole program in front of a camera.

After that we played another game to get to know each others names better. We also got an overview about the course and its aims. Throughout the whole time we had to re-evaluate our feelings and our mood.

At the end we split up into pairs. We had to tell each other about us („I'm from....“) for 5 minutes each, while the counterpart had to listen without talking/responding. Then we dissolved the groups and each person had to present the story of his_her counterpart.

Before ending the course, our lectors had a little surprise for our birthday girl Sarah: Instead of a cake she got fresh watermelon (which of course we all ate).

Some of us used the free afternoon for sports, other went to the mall or looked for postcards but in the end we all met again for dinner. The last task for today will be our first homework!

Day 3 – 07/23/18 Kentland Farm and Cascade Falls or  a trip through the rain forest

After our daily breakfast routine, we started our trip to Kentland Farm, Virginia Tech’s primary agricultural research station. There we learned a lot about farm management and their working processes. The Dairy Complex keeps 250 cows on nearly 1,800 acres around Virginia Tech, uses the farm for researches and the products are served at the dining halls. So, we are enjoying the milk every day during our meals.

Right after lunch, David, Alli and Ian drove us to the starting point to go for our hike to the Cascade Falls. It was drizzling at the beginning and nobody expected the storm that was waiting for us. When we finally arrived at the falls we were totally soddened and it didn’t matter whether we wore wet clothes or jumped into the water in swimsuits. The fear of getting sick was outweighed by enjoying this great experience. Ironically, back to the cars, the sun decided to come out again.

Before wrapping up the evening together at the Sharkey’s, we were exploring Blacksburg a little bit and bought a lot of souvenirs at the Virginia Tech store.

Day 2 - 07/22/18 Exploring VT and Blacksburg  or A food lovers paradise

The day started quite early, because everyone was a bit jetlagged. At 7am we met for breakfast at Dietrick Hall. We were simply overwhelmed by the selection and quantity of the breakfast buffet. Pancakes, Bacon, Scrambled Eggs, Fruits, Waffles, Bagels, Donuts, Breakfast Burritos.... a food lovers paradise! Satisfied and with full bellies, we met Alli, Ian, David, Lynn, Paddy and Carrie. Alli and Ian are Graduate Students at VT working for the International Office. Lynn, Paddy and Carry are our teachers in the next three weeks and David is our coordinator. After a short confusion on which floor the meeting takes place, we finally all made it. Through fun games, we got to know each other better and laughed a lot.

After that we got a short tour around the campus by Alli and Ian. The campus is huge, beautiful and impressive. It took at least twenty minutes to walk from one end to the other. Afterwards we had lunch at Dietricks Hall. Again, we ate too much. You could eat almost everything: Fries, Burgers, Burritos, Soup, Salad, Pasta, Pizza, Indian Cuisin, Cakes and many other delicious dishes.
At 1.15pm a Blacksburg City Tour was planned. Due to rain, we decided to do the tour by bus. Our first stop was the "Lyric" theater. There we got a brief introduction in the activities and history of Blacksburg. The weather god had mercy and the sun was shining when we left the theater. Thats why we could then explore the city by foot. Sebastian delighted everyone with a beautiful play on the city's public piano. Blacksburg is a beautiful, small but lovely city.

In the evening we met for bowling and delicious food in the "BreakZONE". We had lots of fun.
It was just a great day and the perfect start for the upcoming three weeks!

Day 1 - 07/21/2018 The arrival or having patience at Customs

From north, south, west and east Germany, we met at 07/21 in the middle: in Frankfurt at the airport. Three informative, adventurous and fun weeks were waiting for us. Everyone was very excited and full of anticipation, not only for the upcoming weeks, but also to see their new friends again.  Almost everyone arrived very early at the airport, so there was plenty of time to talk while having a coffee and McDonalds Junk Food at the gate.

The flight was very uncomplicated: no screaming babies, no snores, "good" food, friendly stewardesses and good movies, so the eight hours flight ran very fast. After arriving at the airport we had to wait several hours at the Customs. With a heavy jetleg this required a lot of patience from us. After more than two hours we finally made it - Welcome to the U.S!
Then we were picked up by two Virginia Tech Students. It was pouring rain, so we were lucky to sit in a warm bus. After 4 hours of driving and a short stop  at Dominos
for Pizza, we arrived at 23pm at the Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. We all were totally tired and exhausted but also very happy to finally be here. After we quickly moved into our shared rooms, we all sleep very well.
